Ukraine’s spring planting pace picked up sharply by 1 May, supported by dry weather that allowed fieldwork to progress across key regions. In total, more than 2.9 MHA were planted over the past week, marking a significant recovery after weather-related delays in April.

According to the AgMin, 57% of the planned spring grain and pulse area and 43% of the industrial crop area had been planted as of 1 May.

Spring wheat area reached 208 KHA, or 91% of the 2025 forecast. For comparison, the 2024 figure reached 139%, but this was based on an outdated early-May projection of 246.1 KHA, later revised to 173.5 KHA due to frost-related reseeding, explaining the distorted year-on-year comparison.

Barley planting stood at 92%, broadly in line with last year’s pace.

Corn plantings surged to 1.92 MHA, or 48% of the planned area, with a robust weekly gain of 1.21 MHA since 24 April—making it the most dynamic crop of the week.

Sunflower sowing reached 47%, while soybeans lagged slightly at 30%, although still ahead of 2024 levels.
