According to the European Commission, as of 23 February 2025, the EU had imported 12.5 MMT of soybean meal since the start of the 2024/25 marketing season in July, marking a 29% y/y increase and the highest volume recorded since 2015/16, when imports reached 12.6 MMT over the same period. Fearing disruptions from the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), EU importers accelerated soybean meal purchases ahead of its postponed 2025 enforcement. Competitive pricing from South America further fueled demand. Between 1 July 2024 and 23 February 2025, Argentinian soybean meal exports to the EU nearly tripled y/y, reaching 4.8 MMT, while Brazilian shipments remained relatively stable at 6.1 MMT. Together, the two countries accounted for nearly 88% of total EU imports. Meanwhile, Ukraine and India have surpassed the U.S., emerging as the EU’s third- and fourth-largest soybean meal suppliers this season. So far, Ukraine has shipped 516.8 KMT, while India has supplied 351.3 KMT to the bloc. The decline in U.S. soybean meal exports stems from stricter EU regulations, intensified competition, and policy shifts aimed at reducing dependence on U.S. agricultural products. Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, France, and Germany accounted for 75% of total EU soybean meal imports, reflecting their dominant role in the bloc’s livestock and feed industries.
