Barley prices in Ukraine are climbing as tight supplies and strong demand continue to shape the market. On 31 Jan, sellers were offering at 235 USD/MT FOB POC and higher, but buyers remained hesitant, bidding around 227 USD/MT.
Olivier Bouillet, Head of Analysis and Insights at ASAP Agri noted that Ukrainian barley prices lagged behind corn and feed wheat for most of the season, making it an attractive choice for feed rations, particularly in autumn. However, by early 2025, barley prices had finally caught up with corn prices, closing the gap that had fueled demand earlier.
Barley demand has been rising steadily in recent weeks, making procurement increasingly difficult, according to Daria Marchenko, a broker at Atria Brokers. "Covering demand is a daily challenge," she noted. With limited stocks, sellers holding 3000 to 5000 MT are only willing to sell at higher prices.
Similar tight supply conditions are being reported in Serbia and Romania, where much of the available volume was sold earlier in the season. Marchenko highlighted that the ongoing shortage is especially challenging for major barley importers like Egypt and Libya, where demand remains strong and switching to cheaper feed alternatives is not feasible.
