Before the russian big invasion in Feb 2022, Ukraine had around 379 KHA of irrigation depending area. 78% (297 KHA) was relying on Kakhovska reservoir. This reservoir underwent severe damage after russian military destroyed the Kakhovska Dam, as underlined Andriy Bilenky, agrarian expert with Project Expedite Justice, at the Trend&Hedge Club on 28 Aug, Kyiv.
The data presented by the speaker is a result of a study "Impact of the Destruction of the Kakhovka Dam on Ukrainian Agriculture", published by the Project Expedite Justice.
It can be said that roughly 1/3 or even 1/2 of the production of all agricultural crops in the Kherson and south of Zaporizhia regions depended on irrigation.
“Losses due to irrigation shutdown in 3 oblasts in terms of areas were around 140 KHA under grains and around 170 KHA under oilseeds, while losses in areas under vegetable and fruits seemed not large. However, if we look at the production volumes losses, they are around 850 KMT of grains, around 500 KMT of oilseeds and nearly 800 KMT of vegetables and fruits losses,” - said A. Bilenky.
Financial losses due to irrigation shutdown are evaluated at around 367.9 MLN USD per year.
